Reply:People find it offensive because they are being called a name in a mean way. If somebody was arguing with you and they called you a name , you would be ticked. They are offended because that name might be something bad.

Reply:Not only are they slang, they're also derogatory terms. They have different connotations than the actual name for the ethnicity.


For instance if I was talking about the new girl in school, and I said, "She's Japanese," that really doesn't say much about what I think about her. But if I said, "She's a jap," you'd probably get the idea that I wasn't too crazy about her.


I think it has a lot to do with the way the terms have been used in the past. If people used the word cracker more often in sentences like, "I wish I was as pretty as that cracker, she always has the cutest clothes, " or "I'm glad we had that cracker to help us out on our first day. Without her, I definitely would've gotten lost," I'd probably be less likely to be offended the next time someone called me that.
Reply:Because those terms are used to demean, make the person less than the equal in the minds of those who use the terms.





The same goes for terms like fag, or dyke, or queer, or pansy, or limp-wrist or ?????
Reply:These are all purposefully derogatory names for people of this or that background. You don't find it offensive because you do not fall into a minority (yet)..so there is no overall offensive name for you. Good luck

Reply:It's ignorance. We passed that intolerant phase a long time ago. Our society now realizes that we are all people worthy of dignity regardless of ethnicity.
