Just recently found out we're having TWINS! We did not want to find out the gender until later, how?

Question is- now that we're having twins, we now feel that it may be better to find out the gender (for shower and preparation reasons- you can only get so many yellow/green stuff)). We found out at the ultrasound at 13 weeks and the doctor said he could most likely tell the gender. So here are my questions...

When are you truly able to determine sex? And if you can- by his reaction, is it obvious that they are boys?

Also- for twins- what are the odds of having boys, girls, or one of each (a website would be WELL appreciated)?

Also- any advice on finding out the gender now or should we still wait for the suprise? I'll tell ya, finding out at the ultrasound was one heck of a surprise!

Thanks in advance from a VERY excited father!

It is always nice to see an excited expecting father.

Places like Babies R Us offer discounts on multiple purchases on bigger items like cribs.

Contact every single company that is affiliated with a baby product. Call the 800 number. Most have a multiples program and provide extra goodies.

Your wife will most likely out grow her pregnancy clothes. Be prepared.

Here is the low down on the boy? Girl? Identical? Fraternal? thing.

If your twins are identical there is a 50/50 chance of being boys or girls.

If your twins are fraternal there if 1/3 change for boy/boy 1/3 chance for girl/girl and 1/3 chance for boy/girl.

Don't consider whether or not the twins are in the same sac or different. This does help determine identical or fraternal.

Please get familiar with the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) I\in case your babies are born early.

I have a good book to recommend but it is boxed up right now b/c I just moved. I will get it out and post the title. It was the best book I found on multiples and a multiples pregnancy and I read a lot of them.

Cook and freeze several meals when the due date gets close. The last thing you will have time for is cooking a meal.
Reply:13 weeks is little too early to tell.. Since you are a high risk pregnancy (all twins are high risk) you'll need frequent followup and frequent ultrasounds.. 20 weeks is an optimal time to check for anatomy with level 2 ultrasound. That is the best time for checking for sex of the baby..
Reply:I believe it is boys they can tell early. When it is a girl they always tell you it is not 100% unless you have amino then they could tell for sure. So I would fill your cupboards with lots of blue. Good luck you are truly blessed with a wonderful gift or should I say gifts.
Reply:well i would wait 2 find out so u can be more surprised then finding out other ways then from the doctor and plus if u find out any other way it might not be true
Reply:Other posts are right about finding out gender...20 weeks.

In regard to finding out other info, you might try babycenter.com. I was addicted to it when I was pregnant, esp. the bulletin boards. You and your wife can chat with other women who are expecting twins. http://www.babycenter.com/boards/bcuspre...

They also have a ton of twin-related articles http://www.babycenter.com/pregnancy/carr...

So happy for you two.
Reply:Congrats. I have twins. Anyway you have to be at least 20 weeks to know what sex of the babies are. I suggest a neutral color like yellow or something for the baby showers for now.
Reply:i would go a head and find out the sex but normaly you cnt find out what your having until about 20 weeks preg. i have 2 more weeks until i find out what i am having
Reply:My Dr told me it would be better to wait until I was at least 20 weeks.
Reply:you can make a definitive judgement on the sex when they come out...the odds are 50/50
Reply:Do whatever you feel is right remember you want to be ready and to know in advance so taht you can know how to prepare.
Reply:congratulations!!!
Reply:Usually the 5th month you can determine the sex.

Your wife should be careful and take extra good care of her self. Twins are a high Risk pregnancy. Be aware of that.

I have 8 year old twins. Boy/girl. We found out at 20 weeks. We wanted to know so we could get what we needed.

One piece of advice is to start buying diapers. When you do your shopping pick up a bag or two. Get a some of all the smaller sizes. Don't worry about premie sizes because more than likely your babies wil be too big for premies. This is the time to look for sales. We did this and we were SO THANKFUL. The added costs of twins the first three months is scary. This way it takes some of the stress off. I had to stop nursing at 8 weeks because of an illness. The cost of formula and ,if we had to buy diapers, was over $600/month. And this was 8 years ago!

Also your wife needs lots of protein for the babies. Unfortunately she won't feel like eating that much.. I drank a protein shake each day. Each of my twins weighted over 7lbs. My doctor now asked his moms to be to drinks these shakes.

Most of all enjoy this wonderful time.

God bless you and your wife and your growing family
Reply:Congratulations to you and the mom-to-be!!

Knowing the gender makes preparing for the babies SO much easier.

The ultrasound tech will tell you how sure they are of the sex. If they are not positive they can tell you the gender, they will say so. My OB said that the sex can be determined easier after 18 weeks.

I'll look for a website for you. Did the doctor say if the twins were identical or fraternal? that should have been fairly easy to determine from an ultrasound. If they are identical, then obviously both babies will be the same sex. If I can find a good site I will post it here for you.

Good luck %26amp; congrats again!
Reply:You can still be suprised. Okay so don't stock up on all yellow and green items. Buy some blues - girls can be put in blue sleepers and so forth. Its easier to dress a girl in boy outfits than to put a boy in girl things.

Pick up a couple of girl outfits closer to the due date and keep the receipts - if you don't have a girl exchange them.

The babies will only be wearing new born clothes for a few months, they grow quickly!

Stock up on diapers, onesies and sleepers for now - as well as things like wipes, lotion, etc.

Decorate the baby's room in a variety of colors with a neutral theme like Nursery Rhymes or Winnie the Pooh.

In the end healthy babies is the only real thing that matters. Maybe you'll be lucky and have one baby of each gender. Congratulations!!
Reply:First of all~ Congrats! My doctor told me that before 20 weeks you are basically just guessing. That around 20 weeks, you can see more definate things that you are looking for. As far as the stats on twins being both boys, girls or one of wach, I have no idea. All I know is that I work at a school and all our twins are same sex. We seem to have more boy sets than girl sets. Hope that helps some!
Reply:Ultrasounds can usually show the sex by 20 weeks. It is not 100% reliable. And babies will not always pose for the probe, so you may not get a clear view. Since you are having twins, your wife will have more then the usual number of ultrasounds, so you will have more opportunities to get a good look.

Congratulations!
Reply:firstly CONGRATULATIONS!

i wish i was having twins... sometimes... but only got one growing in there...

i would find out the sex, for practicle reasons... we are going to...

but i have done a lot of research about pregnancy (is what i do... research everything... like to know what is happening to my body) and ultrasounds are good to find out what the sex is, but not 100%... one website i found said to be safe leave all the tags on the stuff you buy, just in case...

a good Dr can tell the sex early on... anytime from now (i am 14 wks.. and am going to ask at my next ultrasound at 19wks)... i think the Dr i saw has already let it slip... i am sure she said 'she is getting shy' when the bubs turned away from the dodalacky they use to see the bubs...

the odds are more likely to have identical twins (same sex... boys or girls) then unidentical ones (one boy one girl) so again i would find out the sex!

once again... congrats! i am very excited for both of you... you will certainly have your hands full! :o)
Reply:You can't ever be 100% unless you do a amniocentisis. This puts the pregnancy at risk so it is not advised for this reason
Reply:Congratulations! I found out the sex of my twins around 20 weeks. I can't remember any of the sites that I went to though.
Reply:There is a website, I think its www.twins.com or something. I checked it out once. The doctors can tell you almost with 100% accuracy wether it'll be a boy or girl, but another way I heard is the way they are in the womb. If they are up high its girls, down low boys, but its not 100% accurate. I know they thought I'd be born a boy or my mom would have twins but I was born an only girl. But that was back in the 80's..the only sure fire way would be to ask the doctor. I'm not sure on the odds but ask your doctor. Congrats on twins!
Reply:They were able to tell me that I was having a girl at 15 weeks. Some people and some Doctors will tell you that you can't tell or wont try until 18 to 20 weeks. It just depends on your Doctor. I would find out the genders. It will be alot easier as you said, to prepare for them. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
Reply:My TWIN sister is an ultrasound tech. You can see the genitalia at 20 weeks more clearly and further along. Boys are very easy to recognize, girls show what techs refer to as a "hamburger". Two white lines and a dark line in the middle when the position is correct. To have identical twins, they obviously will be the same sex. Fraternal twins can be a boy and a girl, or both the same sex with different genes, so they will not look alike. Fraternal twins are TWO eggs that the mother produces unlike most women ovulating only one egg. And Identical twins are split from the same egg because the parents contributed too many of the same genes (I.e. brown eyes, brown eyes, medium skin, medium skin) so there is no dominant or recessive ability so the egg splits. I would definitely find out the sex....you have no idea what you're getting into!!! Congrats and good luck!
Reply:I am a mother of 16 year old Boy/Girl Twins!

I started out wanting to be surprised, but broke down and let the doctor tell me (through ultra sounds). I am glad that I found out prior to delivery.

I was able to do "SOME" planning ahead, and preparation - beyond the yellow and green outfits. Most importantly, I got a great deal of comfort out of knowing who was about to come into my life. Pregancy with multiples can be quite difficult, if not risky.

Yes, it is is is absolutely possible to determine the sex of your unborn child through ultra sound. My ultrasound findings were 100% accurate.

Here is a site with lots of info on twins, it is a national organization, called the National organization of Mother of Twins Club

Congratulations to you %26amp; yours! You will NEVER buy one of anything EVER again!
