Couldn't find my left ovarie?

Today i went and got a pelvic ultrasound, as i was having pain in my right side, he said he couldn find my ovaries properly so he did an internal one, found my right ovarie (which he said was fine) but he was looking forever to find my left ovarie and never did...He said that is really strange for a young woman (im 18) that he couldnt find it. But just gave up..Now i am worried! where is it..do i even have one!

Is there another reason why he may not be able to find it?

Couldn't find my left ovarie?
If the ovary was not imaged, it does not mean it is not there! Usually, young ovaries are pretty easy to find on ultrasound. Young ovaries are like grapes.....fat and juicy. As we get older, they become like raisins and are harder to find.

Bowel in the pelvis can obscure pelvic organs. Ultrasound cannot see through air, and the bowel has a lot of gas in it. The air causes the sound waves of ultrasound to be stopped. This is why we put gel on your skin for transabdominal imaging, as it creates an air free contact for the transducer (or camera). Sometimes, at the time of your scan, the water you drank for the transabdominal pelvic scan can still be travelling through your intestines, and that can be a cause of the inability to visualize an ovary. What we usually do, in a case like this, is bring the patient back in a few days and try again. The best time to see ovaries is right before ovulation, when you have follicular cysts on them.

Visualizing the ovaries is also very user dependant. If the person doing your ultrasound was not experienced or skilled, they could have trouble seeing the ovaries. Did you go to an ultrasound facility, either a hospital imaging department or a free standing imaging facility? Or did you have your scan at your doctor's office? A licensed ultrasound technologist and/or a radiologist work in imaging facilities, and they are more experienced and trained in ultrasound than a doctor, as that is their specialty. Usually we will see the "missing" ovary on the patient's second visit.
