Missing man search nearing its end

The search for a missing Alzheimer's patient could be coming to a close. Gary Lorenz disappeared five days ago from his home in Cotopaxi. It's a rugged area about 30 miles west of Canon City. Dozens of searchers have been combing a massive area. They've gone through hills, cliffs, and dense trees, and, they haven't found any trace of him or his two dogs.

On Monday afternoon Lorenz got on his ATV, and took his two golden retrievers just over a ridge behind his house. As far as search and rescue can tell, his ATV rolled 4 times. His hat was found nearby. Five days later, that is all they have found. Sharon Estis is a volunteer. She says, "It is a big mystery. They just cannot find him."

Dozens of searchers have worked day and night. They've been using helicopters, and planes with in-fared cameras. On the ground, ATVs, horses, and crews on foot are combing about 150 miles of rugged terrain. Steve Morrisey is part of the search and rescue team. He says, "This type of terrain, we could be yards from a person and not know it."

Making the search harder is that Lorenz suffers from Alzheimer's, and barely speaks. So, most of the hope finding him alive lies in the dogs. Morrisey says, "With Alzheimer's, we are not sure if his mental faculty is working fully, even to respond to us, so we're hoping a lot for the dogs."

Most of the searchers are neighbors and family. They believe, that even with this disease, the retired Air Force Colonel could still be alive. Estis says, "He's a survivalist. you don't live out here and not have survival skills, plus his military training."

About 10 agencies are also searching. As hours, and days pass with no signs there is word tonight that the official search could be called off Saturday. Morrisey says, "It's kind of hard to drop something like this, because you always think he could be around the next corner."

That area is very popular with hunters. There is a theory that he could have hitchhiked with one of them. There have been some reported sightings, but it's turned up nothing. He was last seen wearing a gray shirt and jeans. If you have any information call the Fremont County Sheriff's Office.

Sounds like a lot of people are already looking. You, his family and other friends have my sympathies and I pray that he will be found soon.

Edit: Maybe there is a sink hole he has fallen into. Maybe keep an eye of for something of the sort. I hope that helps.
Reply:Oh that's sad. I hope he's found safe.
